Setup Demand-Dial Filters on Windows Server 2k3

- 28 February 2011, 02:02

If you enable Demand-dial routing on Windows Server 2003 operating sytem with the default settings, then this can lead to security breaches. In fact, unauthorized devices can connect to your internal network and access resources that they do not have permission to. Additionally, users from your company network can use the demand-dial networks even they do not have the permission to do this. To circumvent these issues, Windows Server 2003 operating system allows you to setup filters on demand-dial interfaces, and thus allow access over demand-dial interfaces to trusted devices and users.

In the coming paragraphs you’ll learn to set up filters on demand-dial interfaces. This article is written for LAN administrators, Windows Administrators and students preparing Windows server 2003 certifications. It can be useful also for people studying for the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) certification exam.

Take into account that you should be a member of the Administrators group in order to execute the following procedure. It is suggested to right-click the Routing and Remote Access icon and then click on Run As option rather than to open a Windows session using the credentials of a member of the Administrators group.

If you opened a session with identification information of a member of the Administrators security group, you can also open the Routing and Remote Access MMC (Microsoft Management Console) by double-clicking on Routing and distant access located in the Administrative Tools folder, which you can it by clicking on Start and then click on Control panel.

Read the following instructions to configure a demand-dial filter:

Step 1: Open Routing and Remote Access MMC (Microsoft Management Console).

Step 2: In the tree structure of the console, click on Routing and Remote Access

Step 3: Click on the name of your Server.

Step 4: Click on Network Interfaces.

Step 5: In the details area, click with the right button of your mouse on the demand-dial interface you need to set up, and then click on Set IP Demand-dial filters.

Step 6: In the dialog box “Set Demand-Dial Filters”, complete one or more of the following actions:
* Click on New in order To add a demand-dialer filter.
* Click on the filter, and then click on Edit in order to modify the parameters of a demand-dialer filter.
* Click on the filter, and then click on Delete in order to remove a previously configured demand-dialer filter.

Step 7: Click on the suitable action for the filter in Initiate connection.

The CCNA exam is not an easy exam, and I suggest you to purchase one CCNA study guide from the ones available on the market and get a video CCNA certification training to pass you exam and build up your routing and switching skills.
