Inexpensively Upgrading Your Computer With Ram

The mechanical aspects of a computer are often mentioned as though they were something mystical. They aren’t. You can pop the cover on your basic personal computer and see it is comprised of some basic parts. This also means you can upgrade the performance of it much like you can with a car – by going with high performance aftermarket parts.

Ever opened a large file and you computer seems to slow way down? This can happen with everything from video files to spreadsheets to even just running your basic Windows 7 platform. Most advertising would suggest that you need a better CPU because you need better processing times. In truth, this is not really the problem. For most people, the problem is a lack of RAM.

What is RAM? It is an abbreviation for “random access memory”. It refers to a memory device independent of your hard drive. The computer stores data that it needs in quick bursts there. It is somewhat equivalent to short term memory in human beings.

So, what is the problem with your RAM? Well, software has grown in size and complexity over the years. Despite this, most computer manufacturers still put laughably small amounts of RAM in their computers. Some come with only 256kb although most are now moving to 512kb. Whichever amount you have, it is much too small to run most modern software and you really need to upgrade.

The good news is you can upgrade really easily and cheaply. You can get 2 gigabytes of RAM for $60 or so. Personally, I go with the maximum a computer can handle. That is usually 4 gigabytes. Whatever amount you choose, the difference will amaze you. It is like having a new computer. Everything is fast because you now have the power to process the software applications on your computer.

If you are unhappy with the performance of your computer or considering buying a new one, don’t spend the money just yet. Try upgrading your RAM and see what kind of difference it makes. It is an inexpensive option that can really produce big performance gains for you.
